A 54 year-old woman came in with lower back pain and pressure around her bladder and lower abdomen. Her GFR (glomerular filtration rate) was 30mL/min which is considered Stage 3 of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). GFR is a measure of how well the kidneys filter waste and toxins from the blood. A higher GFR generally indicates better kidney function. A biopsy showed interstitial nephritis, which is a type of kidney disease that can lead to kidney failure. She was very anxious and was also recovering from surgery to remove a thyroid nodule during the course of treatment.
The patient followed the recommended treatment plan and came twice a week for one month, once a week for five weeks, every two weeks for one month, and continues to come for monthly visits. She completed 18 visits over five months. She was prescribed herbal medicine to strengthen her kidneys at the 15th treatment. After the first treatment, her lower abdominal pain subsided and she did not report any back pain after the 9th visit. She has increased energy and less discomfort in the throat. At her last checkup, her GFR had increased to 68 and her kidney function is now within normal range!
