We’re so glad you’ve taken the first step toward improving your health with Traditional Chinese Medicine. I hope your initial experience was both informative and positive. As you continue your healing journey, I’d like to share a few things to keep in mind to maximize the benefits of your treatment. We are committed to helping you achieve your health goals, whether you’re dealing with an acute or chronic issue. Please take note of any changes or observations you experience within the first 24 hours after your session. This will help us make any necessary adjustments to keep the momentum going and enhance the effectiveness of your treatments.
1. Stay Hydrated
Acupuncture helps your body release toxins and return to balance. Drinking plenty of water after your session will help flush out toxins and dead cellular debris, allowing you to heal more effectively. In rare cases, you may notice a headache after a treatment or symptoms worsening following the initial appointment. This could be due to detoxification and dehydration, so it’s important to be gentle with your body by avoiding rigorous exercise, and mention this to your practitioner at the next appointment.
2. Be Consistent
Consistency is key to achieving lasting results. Just like with any health practice, regular acupuncture treatments can help your body and mind form new pathways for healing. To stay on track, I recommend scheduling your appointments in advance and opting for recurring appointments. That way, it’s easier to make time for your sessions rather than trying to squeeze them in later or adding yourself to a waitlist.
3. Reduce Stress
We’re all familiar with the stressors of daily life, but stress can negatively affect our health in many ways. Taking time each day to pause, breathe, and find joy in small moments can have a profound impact on your well-being. Try to stay mindful of your thoughts and allow yourself time to relax and reset. Moving your body or engaging in creative activities can also help relieve stress.
4. Breathe
Breathing is one of the most powerful tools we have. It’s easy to take it for granted, but conscious breathing brings oxygen to every cell in our body and can quickly bring a sense of calm. Whenever you get a chance, try a simple breathing exercise and notice how much more relaxed you feel.
Key Areas to Observe Between Sessions
Acupuncture is highly effective for addressing a variety of conditions, and being mindful of changes in your body between sessions will help us make the most of our work together. Take note of the following and bring any observations to your next appointment.
Physical Discomfort
Location: If your pain moves from its original spot, that’s a good sign that the stagnation is starting to clear. Sometimes, it can even shift to the opposite side—let’s track its movement to understand where it originates.
Duration: How long does the discomfort last? Does it fade on its own without medication? If your pain was constant, is it now coming and going?
Frequency: If the discomfort comes and goes, how often does it occur each day or week?
Severity: On a scale of 1-10 (with 1 being no symptoms and 10 being the worst pain you’ve ever felt), how would you rate the severity of your discomfort?
Menstrual Cycles
In my ebook, Secrets of Your Cycle, I explain how Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views the menstrual cycle as a window into a woman’s overall health. Working together to improve the quality of your blood can help address underlying imbalances. Here are some key aspects to track:
Color: Any changes in the color of your blood during your cycle?
Clots: Are there any noticeable clots? If so, how large are they?
Cramps: How intense are the cramps, if any? Where do they occur?
Cycle Length and Flow: Is your cycle regular (e.g., 28 days, 5 days of flow)? Any changes in length or flow intensity?
Emotional Fluctuations: Notice any changes in mood, such as irritability, sadness, or anxiety around your cycle?
By paying attention to these areas, we can make targeted adjustments to your treatment plan and ensure we’re addressing the root causes of any imbalances.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns in between appointments. We’re here to support you on your journey toward better health!
